Why did you pick your skater name? I love to bake and my favorite baked treat is a cupcake. I wanted to incorporate that into my other favorite thing to do . . . Play derby!

Why did you pick your number? It’s my son’s birthday.

Athletic Background: Absolutely none!!!!

Favorite Derby Position: Blocker / Pivot

What made you want to join derby? I used to skate for fun when I was younger, but when I saw a derby bout a few years back, I fell in love and decided I needed to get on a team and try this amazing sport!

What advice would you give someone interested in joining? You just have to do it. At least go through a fresh meat program. There will be days that hurt, and there will be days of glory!!!! Even if you decide its not for you, there are so many other ways to be involved. Refs and Non-Skating Officials are crucial members of our derby community.

Additional Info: I joined FFF in 2014. I played with another team for about a year before that.

Lei-Z

Lei-Z

2034

Skater Name: Lei-Z

Skater Number: 2034

Hometown: Pomona

Why did you pick your skater name?
I was trying to come up with a name and nothing seemed to fit so I thought why not play off my wife’s name “Hawaiian Lei U Out”. I put it on a group I’m in on Facebook for a little help and between the group and I, we figured it out.

Why did you pick your number?
Well 2034 is a combination of two different numbers. #20 was the number I wore while I played in an adult league basketball team called “RAGE” from Pomona. We won a few championships in different cities so that number is kind of important to me. #34 is the reason I became a huge Raiders fan because that number belonged to Bo Jackson. The first time I saw him play, I was immediately hooked and I’ve been a die hard fan ever since.

Athletic Background:
Played little league catcher in Pomona for about three years. In high school I played football for Bonita HS as a cornerback/offensive tackle/QB. Played as a shooting guard in an adult basketball league for several years.

Favorite Derby Position:
As a Head Non-Skating Official one of my favorite positions is score keeper. As a ref in training I have to say the Inside Pack Ref is my favorite so far since I don’t have to skate that much because the oval is smaller.

What made you want to join derby?
The wife and I went on vacation to Florida to witness her cousin get married and the woman he was marrying played derby. She goes by the name Nicc Vicious. I thought roller derby was done until we came home and looked into it. IT’S EVERYWHERE!

What advice would you give someone interested in joining?
Derby stance, derby stance, derby stance! It will save you.

Additional Info:
I barely started learning how to skate on quads since about Ocotber of 2015 to become a ref. This is my second year with FFF and I’m enjoying it. The girls are always encouraging me with my skating and during scrimmages they don’t really get too upset if I make a bad call as a ref. Ok, shout out time: Thank you Jake from State Farm, aka Farfrompuken, and Rainbow SmasHer for helping me transition into a ref; thank you Naasty for helping learn to skate and being patient with me in the beginning; thank you Kupcake for being extremely encouraging and a good friend; and last, but definitely not least, thank you to my wife Hawaiian Lei U Out for always pushing me and being very supportive! *Mic Drop

What made you want to join derby?
My sister asked me if I wanted to go to a informational session for roller derby and I never looked back.

What advice would you give someone interested in joining?
If you’re considering joining derby, do it! It will be one of the best decisions that you will make. It isn’t an easy path, but it is worth it. Not only is it physically demanding, but it is also mentally demanding. But if you can find your place in derby, the struggles you face will make you a stronger person. I am a better version of myself because of roller derby.

Additional Info:
I started roller derby at the end of 2014 and soon after hurt myself during freshmeat practice. I was on crutches for four months and it was awhile before I had the courage to put on skates again. Then in January 2015 I saw that FFF was having a meeting and I couldn’t help myself from going to the information session. I joined the league and haven’t stopped skating since.
